The traditional way we try to encourage people to achieve a desired goal usually rests on financial reward. This is contrary to scientific research – a lot of it.
So, how should we motivate people to achieve the most desirable outcomes? Reward narrows focus and works well for narrow problems. For more complex scenarios requiring innovative ‘out of the box’ thinking, what matters is stimulating the right brain creative processes. Don’t confine. Allow people to spread out intellectually. Encourage this.
Take 15 minutes to listen to the highly entertaining Dan Pink and then think about what it means for your client organisation. Reward processes are a crucial cog driving the fly-wheel of organisational productivity. Leaders and key stakeholders need to know this.
