After completing two three-years terms as Chairman (2011-17), the time is right to step down as Chairman of the IIM. I am humbled to have had the opportunity to do this for such an extended period – the first term alongside the late Hilary Husbands. In stepping down myself, I’m delighted to advise that Ettie McCormack has accepted and will assume the Chairmanship of the Institute of Interim Management (IIM) effective immediately.
The Chairmanship has been a fascinating experience. Leading a professional body for a community of people who like to do things independently themselves, does teach humility. Thanks to all those who have offered their support over the years and to the IIM Board. This ‘interim’ gig has actually lasted longer than any ‘permanent’ job I’ve held.
I’m going to take pleasure from the things that went well, learning from the things that went less well, and I’ll be continuing to support the IIM’s survey and LinkedIn activities as IIM Board Director.
Our eighth Chairman, Ettie is a seasoned interim manager that I have had the pleasure of working with both as a fellow IIM Board member, and also professionally as a respected HR senior interim. I’m looking forward to Ettie’s stewardship continuing to develop themes of collaboration in the independent professional sector and sharing tools and ‘best practice’ for independent professionals, interim managers and executives.

I am excited at the prospect of assuming the mantle of Chairman of the IIM – the UK’s professional body for independent professionals, interim managers and executives. It is also a formidable challenge to follow in the steps of a long serving and experienced Chairman like Ad, who has dedicated a lot to make the IIM recognised in its efforts to provide advocacy and a platform to promote professional interim managers.
Ad’s contribution in the development and growth of the always eagerly anticipated Annual Interim Providers’ Survey, shows how much he has done to promote and represent the professional interim across all industries and sectors, and also a platform for the Interim Service Providers who are rightly recognised each year by an independent public vote. There is no better endorsement than the recognition of your market. This is a valuable service that Ad will carry forward, finding ways to evolve the survey for the benefit of interims and providers equally, by continuously raising client awareness of the unique benefits that can be gained from hiring the right expertise just when it’s needed.
We live in what is commonly referred to as a ‘VUCA’ world. The characteristics are summed up in the acronym as Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. Collectively, VUCA presents a paradox. We cannot predict the future based on the past, but we need to make sense of it, accelerate our delivery and be nimble enough to adjust quickly and confidently with and for our clients. I believe that rethinking the VUCA acronym can help us, and trusted service providers, actively market the interim value proposition to provide Vision, Understanding, Certainty and Agility. These are amongst the skills and experience that are brought to bear by the interim community and I want to ensure the IIM promotes with pride and ambition more that recognises the distinctive contribution this sector brings to the success of UK plc.
